Unleashed

“The forces unleashed by the presidency of Donald Trump.”

I always knew they were out there. I didn’t think there were so many of them. But I knew their numbers were growing, not shrinking, and I knew they were getting angrier and angrier, and more and more violently inclined—explicitly desirous of venting that anger at those who they blamed and hated so vociferously.

I knew there were those who were deliberately provoking and increasing their fears, alienation, and anger, while simultaneously making their lives worse economically with their policies, and directing the blame at ‘us’…the vast majority of decent Americans who ranged across the political spectrum but believed we would continue to suppress the darker side of human nature and keep moving to the light guided by “our better angels.” The latter, for them, are simply seen, or more accurately, viscerally felt, as a vast monolithic specter they refer to as: “The Liberals,” now also called disdainfully, “The Leftists.”

They have been manipulated, propagandized, and cultivated deliberately for over 40 years for political purposes, and intensively for the past 25-30 (notably since Limbaugh went national in 1988 and Fox launched in 1996.) You can find endless statements from those who participated in this onslaught proudly claiming both their roles and intentions as they brag about their success.

The question I can’t ever seem to answer is “Why?” Greed, yes, of course. “They” have become obscenely rich and powerful, but they could have achieved that without resorting to such evil and fanning such hatred. Listen to Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, Beck, Roger Ailes, any of them, and they have a true palpable hatred of the people they call “Liberals”…the rest of us, Americans, decent people who want the country to be the best it can be. One can only speculate about the motivations of the enormous money behind the aforementioned public faces, the Kochs, the Murdochs, the Mercers and the names that aren’t public knowledge. And I wonder what their plans are for after they “win” —and we are so close to that end point—for when society finally breaks down, the economy collapses, government falls, and violence breaks out—what then?

I fear for the worst and hope for the best, it can go either way at this dangerous flash point we have reached.
